Mens 35 Just Miss out on Promotion

August 24, 2021

Last weekend played at Eastbourne in the over 35s. It was exciting to be so close in our quest to get into group one and share the success of Fran and the ladies, and with a 2 -0 lead against Herts it looked like we had a great chance.

 Our captain Anthony Mills reports:

The guys sadly came 2nd after a tough match against Herts. We had a brilliant positive 1st match with all 6 players playing and beat Cornwall 5-0. Herts having Neil Bamford was the key. Zoltan and Gideon put us ahead 2-0 after 2exceptional singles but we new Neil coming in for a doubles match was going to be tough and was all still to play for. But the killer was the last rubber at 2-2 rubbers all. Zoltan and Gideon teamed up after their singles and were unbelievable going to a strong 4-0 win in the 1st set (doubles went to fast 4 because of the weather). 2nd set their pair really stepped up and didn’t miss and the momentum shifted and they stormed the 2nd set. Match tiebreak Gideon pulled a stomach muscle badly while serving and struggled with any overheads which they were outstanding at playing and knew he was in trouble.

But our new recruits in Zoltan, Gideon, Richard and James Mott all played a huge part in giving us a real shot at promotion.. The team moral is at an all time high even after being devastated after Saturdays defeat and this showed in the match on Sunday with a strong win to guarantee 2nd place, as the guys wanted to finish on a positive note and finish the group 2nd and not let their heads drop.

 -Exciting times -
