Middlesex Summer League Review Statement

November 16, 2022

Dear Team Captain / Club Main Contact

The League Management Committee would like to thank you all for responding to our questionnaire. We got over 900 responses, and several matters were raised.

After a long discussion, we concluded that as the results were inconclusive, with strong opinions for and against all options, we have decided to continue to run the trial for one more season at the end of which we will send out another questionnaire with any changes being implemented for the Summer 2024 season.

Bearing in mind that this is a big change to the format of the league, we don’t want to get it wrong and then have to make another change in a couple of years.

We would like to thank everyone for their support of the league. It is rewarding to know so many players commit so much time and effort to the Middlesex Summer League in organising and playing matches as well as providing post-match hospitality.

The Middlesex Summer League is a mid-week evening league run by our Middlesex Summer League Committee, Chris Green (Sec) and supported by Regional Secs Brenda, Ro, Hilary and Mike and Middlesex Tennis.

We would like to thank Mike for his service over the past 35 years and welcome Ian Crew from Lowlands Club who takes over as the North West Regional Secretary.

In 2022, we had 6216 active players ranging from 11 to 81 years old, with 1951 matches played throughout the season.

Why was the survey Inconclusive?

There was a 54% for 6-6 and play advantage and 46% for Tie break and No Ad scoring. In the additional comments, this was followed 250 comments suggesting other formats and implications.

We also work with the LTA and as one of the biggest leagues in the UK, we want to ensure our format fits in with the LTA Approved League Status. One of the major benefits of this is results counting towards World Tennis Number.
