Performance Updates

November 3, 2021

County Training

Winter county training sessions have started and are again catering for over 200 performance players across the whole of the county.

The purpose of county training is to identify, select and prepare players to represent Middlesex in the LTA County Cup events with an aim of winning the LTA Champions Race.

For this year the ethos of training has evolved to further prepare players to be more effective and successful on the doubles court. This will involve much more work developing confidence around the net, movement forward and tactical positioning. County training offers players something over and above to what they experience every day with regards to opportunities to develop and is an important addition to a players programme.

The Middlesex coaching team has been strengthened with Stuart Wilkinson (former coach to Grand Slam champion Andy Lapthorne) and Corina Mirea joining our 10u and 14u squads respectively.

For coaches who wish to nominate a player for county training, please send details of the player to Andrew Lewandowski, including programme details and competition profile and results.

LTA Champions Race Update

As we move into the final competition of the year with the Men’s and Women’s event, Middlesex Teams sit in a respectable 4thplace, although we hope for a strong finish to the end of the year.

A big thank you to all players and captains who have represented Middlesex this year in team competitions, and for some great fighting performances and team spirit in the courts.

We are already planning our campaign for 2022, with more details to be announced around LTA County Cups shortly.

New River Training Base

We are extremely fortunate through a partnership with Georgians Tennis Club to be able to access court time at the four court indoor bubble at New River Centre in Wood Green. It is very much the aim of Middlesex Tennis to acquire more indoor venues for training and to expand the offer of training squads to midweek.

As a first phase, squads have been organised for players based in North London to access once per week, with an aim to supplementing the players club programme and offering a much needed (in the winter months),indoor session.

Coaches working on the programme include: Peter Neathey, Claire Taylor, David Dempsey and Andrew Lewandowski.

We hope in the future to offer a similar programme in West London, though currently this is very much venue dependent.

LTA Awards 2022

Nominations are currently open for the 2022 LTA awards.

The awards reflect the great work happening across tennis and gives people the opportunity of highlighting and recognising achievement. Amongst the 13 award categories, the role of coaching and coaches plays an important part. Last year Shola Roper 14u Captain, won the performance coach of the year for Middlesex and Mark Bullock the National Award as Development Coach of the Year.

It would be great again for our coaches to feature and I would very much encourage parents and players to nominate either some of the County Team or indeed individual or centre coaches.

Closing date is 15th November.
