High drama at Eastbourne
Chief Executive, Andrew Lewandowski and the Middlesex Tennis team were on hand at Eastbourne for the 2026 Summer County Cup last week to see first hand how our Men’s and Women’s teams got on in Group 1.
Here’s his report:
A week of high drama down at Eastbourne with our Women’s team securing their 3rd consecutive silver medal position (2nd place), whilst the Men’s team after some tough battles and extremely high level tennis, eventually joined Northants in going down to group 2.
Our women’s team, a blend of highly experienced senior women players and very promising junior players, dominated the week with strong wins which included a defeat of Surrey 7/2 and 9/0 victory against Cheshire.
The title match against Hertfordshire, whilst producing some excellent tennis, proved a step too far resulting in a 2/5 defeat for the team. Nevertheless, a great week with the team already looking ahead to build and develop.
The Men made an excellent start to the week, defeating runners up Warwickshire and Northants, before going down in the pivotal Thursday match vs Surrey (3/6). Sadly, lots of chances were missed, including match points in three of the matches we lost. The Men battled on depleted by numbers through injury and fought deep into Friday evening before succumbing to Cambridge. Some captivating and amazing level tennis which really bought out the essence of County Week and what it means to teams, players and spectators.
Tribute to Fran Brewster and Corina Mirea for the excellent work (and hard efforts) in continually building the Women’s team for the future and taking it from strength to strength.
The Men need to be congratulated for their sheer determination and fighting spirit against the back drop of late unavailability and injuries during the week. Their spirit was amazing through the leadership of Jordan Angus and Shola Roper as was the loyalty of players in never quitting.
