Stuart Wilkinson, 10U Performance Lead at Middlesex Tennis explains why playing lots of matches at 8U, 9U & 10U gives young players more than just results – it builds key skills, confidence and a lifelong love of tennis.
Stuart has recently managed the process of selecting players for the Middlesex County squad pathway for 7U to 10U age rage.
He’s been impressed by the quantity and quality of players who have been nominated by Coaches around the county.
“I understand how the sporting landscape is very competitive and time and resources for parents and coaches are limited so wanted to reach out personally and thank you for all you are doing, inspiring, coaching and promoting the sport of tennis to 10 and Under players.”

Stuart continues
“Recent trends are showing less players are actively competing in tennis matches and this could be due to numerous reasons. I am sharing a small Infographic which highlights the importance of players to try and compete in a minimum of 40 matches playing matches. Hopefully, Middlesex as a county with its strong base of quality coaches can encourage our players to achieve more than 40 matches played per year.
Building More Than Just Results
DECISION-MAKING
They learn to attack, defend, change direction, etc.
HANDLING PRESSURE
Even a short match teaches them to deal with winning, losing and being behind.
APPLYING SKILLS
A forehand learned in coaching becomes meaningful when they have to use it against another child.
DIFFERENT OPPONENTS
Playing lots of children exposes them to different styles and levels.
COMPETITION BECOMES NORMAL
The LTA is trying to make competition a normal enjoyable part of tennis rather than something reserved for highly competitive juniors.
MATCHPLAY CAN BE VERY SHORT
LTA 8U Matchplay uses a single match tie-break to 10 points, and sessions are around two hours. So 40 matches doesn’t mean 40 full length adult style matches
Please feel free to share this graphic with any and all players at your club and do reach out to me if you have any questions around the 10U County performance programme.”
