14U County Cup

May 10, 2022

Qualifying Report

Both teams started off Day 1 with two strong wins in both their groups 6-0. It was brilliant to see our teams back in county cup action with teams fighting for a place in the National Finals.

On Day 2, the girls pulled off wins against home team Surrey, 5-1, holding off the biggest challenge to their qualification. Then sealed the place in the finals with a 6-0 win over a young team from Warwickshire.

A tougher day for the boys with two hard-fought and disappointing losses to strong teams from Surrey and Essex. Thomas won his singles in match tie-break in what proved to be the only singles win v Surrey (1-3). Playing Essex Singles next, Louis got the first win on the board however Essex proved too strong and again it was 1-3 after the singles. Unfortunately rain delays meant the doubles format was shortened and the boys pushed hard but could not recover. 1-5 v Surrey and 2-4 v Essex to finish third.

Finals Report

The 14U Finals were held in Nottingham Tennis Centre alongside M25 and W25 hard court events hosted by the LTA.

In what would be a challenging weekend of tennis, Middlesex kicked off day 1 with a 5-1 win v home county, Nottinghamshire.

Up first on Day 2, was match up v first seeds Avon. Middlesex took the early lead 2-0 after the first two singles before Avon equalised with some strong tie-break performances. 1-1 in the doubles forced a tie-break shootout. Whilst Middlesex pushed Avon, Avon took the shootout to seal the tie.

Middlesex closed out the group with a 4-2 win over West of Scotland. Nottinghamshire pushed Avon to another shootout, however Avon pulled through sealing Middlesex's fate into the 3-4th play off match v Cheshire. Routine wins for Celine and Daniela put Middlesex into a strong position as Alice and Annabel were tested and pushed into match tie-breaks. A 3-1 lead after the singles, Alice and Celine sealed the tie 4-3(4) in the final doubles.
