2020 County Cup Race Begins... 18U County Cup

February 28, 2020

It has been a fantastic start to the 2020 LTA County Cup Competitions with Middlesex Tennis looking to further consolidate its position as the top county in Great Britain.

The girls have retained the title of National Champions of 2019 by winning group one and the boys convincingly have gained promotion by winning Group 2B, which means we shall have two teams in Group One next year.

The girls group in Bath was highly competitive, and with a 4/5 defeat to Hampshire and IOW on the first day meant that we would need to win both remaining ties to even stay in Division One.

The girls played exceptionally well to defeat Essex 7/2 on day two, and a convincing win of 6/3 against Yorkshire meant we not only avoided relegation but won the title which was decided on the last doubles.

It is a huge credit to the girls team for their fighting efforts and Ronnie Maxwell’s and Louise Hutchinson’s motivational and professional captaincy which kept the team positive to the very end of the competition.

The boys achievement was highlighted by very convincing wins against both Cheshire and Warwickshire, and a resounding 5/1 victory over Herts which means the boys are back in division one after a long absence, and in addition two teams in division one. There was great commitment from the boys in turning out for the county with one player flying back after winning an ITF in Finland to play against Herts on the Sunday.

Otto and Shola have been working tirelessly in moulding this team not only to feature in group one juniors but to quickly make an early transition into men’s tennis, where it really starts to count.

No room for complacency and county captains looking to raise their games further in supporting our players to perform and achieve.
