Chandos Celebrate Centenary

September 30, 2022

Chandos Tennis Club, now based at their new site in East Finchley, are in their centenary year and celebrated with as many members as possible over the weekend of 10th, 11th and 12th June 2022.

The weather was kind for the whole weekend, the first event being a Vintage themed cream tea that followed a wooden rackets event on the frontcourts. This was an invitation to ‘super seniors and long time members and friends of the club’ together with our own General Manager, Andrew Lewandowski and the current Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Alison Cornelius who, together with 85 others, sat down to a sumptuous tea, viewed a documentary on the ‘past, present and future’ of the Club. Speeches were made by past Chairman, David Bernstein, current Chairman, Benoît Belhomme and the current Mayor of Barnet, Alison Moore. Archive footage of past Honorary Members Bobby Wilson and Angela Buxton, who both sadly past away in 2020, formed part of the documentary.

As a going home memento, all guests were given cupcakes with the club’s logo.

Saturday was focussed on fun. The morning was split into 2 sections for Juniors, U10 and U18’s with over 100 attending. Lots of fun games, races and competitions throughout with food pop up stalls on the walkway and garden area throughout the day for all to enjoy. The afternoon sessions for adults attended by over 70 players of all standards from premier level through to division 7 followed with such games as ‘beat the player’ featuring large cardboard cut outs of Djokovic, Nadal, Murray and Federer being at the far end of the courts, reaction timer lights for movement and the Zenniz system both being utilised. Yonnex were in attendance for racket testing. Sunday again featured tennis for all standards in the morning on all courts followed by a very tasty B B Q and Pimms Bar at lunchtime.

All in all, the club had over 500 members and friends of all ages from 4 to 94 through the door to celebrate. In addition, Chandos LTC has now been inducted into the prestigious Association of Centenary Clubs which is recognised by the International Tennis Federation.
