Sheen Parks Tennis host first ever wheelchair tennis tournament

October 13, 2020

On Sunday 11th October Sheen Parks Tennis hosted its first wheelchair tennis tournament on Sheen Common.  Four women and three men competed in some tightly contested round robin matches in the one day event that was supported by the LTA Competitions team.  More than 50% of the matches went to a deciding match tie break with Surrey’s Clare Blake winning the women’s event with 3 wins.  The other players were all on one win each. In the men’s event Tony Quinn (Berkshire) won the event with local player Thomas Dodds in second place.

The tournament was run by Kate Maurici, refereed by Jean-Pierre Guillonnet and supported by volunteers from Sheen Parks Tennis.  The player feedback was very positive and a doubles event is being explored. One of the competitors said ‘Such a well organised event…was so impressed & the team at Sheen were fantastic.’

Alongside the tournament Mark Bullock ran an informal introduction to wheelchair & visually impaired tennis for Sheen Parks tennis coaches.
